Improved Editor Experience with Drupal 10

New Look in the Backend

The popular open-source CMS comes in its latest version with a refreshed look. The backend now uses the new “Claro” theme, replacing the old “Seven” theme. Along with a fresh and clean look and feel, the backend sets high standards for accessibility. All backend users will benefit from this, making working within the system more pleasant and easier. Our customers will also benefit from an extended backend theme developed by us, which further simplifies content management.

New Text Editor

The current text editor, CKEditor 4, will reach its end-of-life at the end of 2023. Therefore, starting with version 10.0, Drupal will use the latest version: CKEditor 5. The new editor features a simpler and better UI, making content editing easier. For example, links can now be edited more easily directly within the text.

For CKEditor, the “Collaboration” feature is available as a premium option. Similarly to common word processing programs, text changes can be tracked and comments can be added.

In addition to these two changes, which are visible to all users, there are significant updates under the hood. Drupal 10 is now based on Symfony 6.2 and PHP 8.1. This enhances the system’s performance and stability. Since the previous versions of these technologies will soon reach their end-of-life, upgrading to Drupal 10 is inevitable.

Our Assessment

With the latest version, Drupal continues on its established path. Version 10 does not introduce an entirely new feature set but essentially replaces the core technologies with their latest versions. This ensures that websites can be updated from version 9 to 10 relatively smoothly. Drupal remains committed to the approach of more frequent but smaller releases, simplifying the update process.

Drupal 9 will reach its end-of-life in November 2023, due to the end-of-life of Symfony 4.

The update from version 9 to 10 should be planned for the second half of 2023. This ensures a timely transition to Drupal 10.
